On Thursday, April 24, project partners, businesses, councilmembers, City leadership and community members gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Westport Stormwater Improvements project.
The event began with speakers highlighting the project’s need and what this project means not just for Westport but all of Kansas City. Remarks were made by Councilmember Eric Bunch, Councilmember Crispin Rea, Marshaun Butler, Chief Operating Officer of St. Luke’s, and Kenneth Morgan, Water Services Director at KC Water. Refreshments were made available from businesses in the Westport area, including Broadway Roasting Co. and Donutology.
The Westport Stormwater Improvements project introduces innovative flood mitigation strategies to protect local homes, businesses, and infrastructure from the impact of severe weather. Two large underground stormwater storage facilities, one at Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park and the other beneath the Sun Fresh Market parking lot, will temporarily store excess runoff during storms, easing pressure on the area’s combined sewer system. You can learn more about the project here.
